Texas Instruments, a leader in analog ICs, has announced that its newest 12-inch chip factory in Richardson, Texas, has begun initial mass production and will continue to expand production in the coming months to meet the future growth of semiconductor demand for electronics.

Texas Instruments said the new RFAB2, which is connected to RFAB1, is one of six 12-inch chip factories that Texas Instruments has added to its manufacturing operations. The new facility is more than 30 percent larger than the original RFAB1, providing more than 630,000 square feet of total cleanroom space between the two plants.

Texas Instruments emphasized that once the new chip factory is fully completed, the 15-mile automated overhead delivery system will seamlessly transport mobile chips between the two chip factories, and Richardson's entire plant will produce more than 100 million analog ICs per day, which will be used in various electronic products including renewable energy, consumer electronics, electric vehicles and other types of electronic products in the future.

Kyle Flessner, senior vice president of Texas Instruments' Technology and Manufacturing Group, said Texas Instruments is excited to have the world's newest and largest 12-inch chip factory and has begun mass production as part of Texas Instruments' investment to increase long-term in-house manufacturing capabilities.

In fact, Texas Instruments acquired Utah-based LFAB in 2021 and is currently preparing for initial production to begin in the coming months. In addition, Texas Instruments also announced in 2021 that it will build four new chip factories in Sherman, Texas, with a total investment of $30 billion. Construction of the first and second plants is underway, and the first plant is expected to start production in 2025. When completed, the entire chip factory is expected to create 3,000 direct jobs in the local area.
